The Gene of Compassion

To the wonderful people in animal rescue... afflicted with the gene.

Some like it hot, some prefer cold
Some are gentle, others bold.
Some grow tall and others wide
Some are bashful, some boast pride.
We have distinctive traits, it seems
Of course we do! It’s in the genes!
When we are born, the genes are set
No telling what we each may get
Some are shrewd and others wise
But surely one gene takes the prize.
This special gene reserved for some
Is not understood by everyone.
Those who have it are cursed and blessed,
Unable to put their minds to rest.
These are the people who see and feel
The suffering that animals cannot reveal.
They hear the cries of anguished pain
They rush to help, sometimes in vain.
They see the faces abandoned, alone.
Neglect, starvation, no love, no home.
The gene of compassion allows them to hear
The desperation, the wanton fear.
Compassionate angels helping the meek
Giving hope to the hopeless, strength to the weak.
They make the world a kinder place.
They are the hope of the human race.
