“An
apple a day keeps the doctor away” doesn’t just
apply to you humans – we canines benefit from
this tasty fruit too! Apple pieces are a great
alternative to all those processed
biscuits
and they are great as training treats. Be sure
to thoroughly wash the apples and don’t feed us
the stems, seed or any part of the core. Apple
seeds contain a substance called “amygdlin”.
This is a form of cyanide. Although it would
take large quantities to cause harm, it is
better to be safe than sorry so just avoid
feeding us any part of the core.
Apples contain Omega 3 & Omega 6 fatty acids.
These fatty acids contribute to a glossy,
healthy coat. Apples are also rich in Vitamin C
which is thought to aid in hip dysplasia. Omega
6 in large quantities can actually cause
inflammation. It’s safe to use apples as treats
but don’t use them as a substitute for proper
arthritic treatment – talk to your doctor about
that. Apples themselves don’t contain large
quantities of the Omega 6 but your parents may
need to balance your diet if they are giving you
those Omegas from other sources, like fish oil.
Apples are a good source of fiber too but again,
don’t overdo it – loose stools are NO fun!
Apples do have natural sugar so as with any
food, it goes back to that old saying,
“everything in moderation”. I don’t know about
you, but “moderation” is not in my vocabulary so
it’s up to my parents to make wise choices for
me!
