Grapes
and Raisins, oh my! Yes we love them but we
should NOT have raisins or grapes in ANY
quantity. Renal (kidney) failure has been
reported with amounts varying from just a few
ounces of grapes and as little as a single
serving of raisins. Renal toxicity can be
evident within 24 hours – it’s that serious!
Signs and symptoms that can appear immediately
may include vomiting, hyperactivity and
jitteriness. Within 24 hours a dog may become
lethargic (limp), depressed and stop eating &
drinking. Dogs may also experience severe
abdominal pain.
As
the kidney damage progresses, in most cases very
rapidly, the dog will no longer produce urine.
At this point, the kidneys may be so damaged and
the dog so sick that they don’t recover and need
to be euthanized.
There is no known reason why this happens but
some theories include: bacteria or fungus on
the grapes, residual pesticides/herbicides and
possibly a high Vitamin D content. Research has
not discovered any conclusive answers – or why
some dogs react so dramatically from just a
small amount.
If
your dog enjoys fruit, there are other healthy
options such as apples, bananas and blueberries.
So,
keep those grapes and raisins out of our reach.
And be sure the kids aren’t sharing their
raisins with us – goldens will eat anything!
If
you suspect your four-legged kid has consumed
grapes or raisins, please call your vet
immediately. If your dog is experiencing any of
the above symptoms, take your dog to the vet or
emergency clinic immediately!
Be
safe and Bone-Appetit!
