A Snowbelle Snippet
HEARTWORM

Today, my Mommie got to spend some time with the super
sweet Rocky the Rockstar. Rocky is a beautiful white
golden with dark, expressive eyes, she said. He lives
at an awesome foster home and is beginning to experience
some really great days.
His life hasn’t always been so good. His previous owner
did not give him heartworm preventative. He got
heartworm disease. What people might not know is that
heartworms kill doggies. It’s not like an infection.
They grow so big that they choke out the blood flow and
then we have to amble across the Rainbow Bridge.
Fortunately, Rocky the Rockstar follows the tradition of
other AZGRC rescues like Belle Valentine. They were
tested, found positive and treated by the wonderful and
caring people at AZGRC.
Treatment isn’t easy. It nearly kills the doggies
because very high doses of treatment are applied.
Depending on what the worms do, they can wind up in the
wrong place. Extremely attentive foster care is
essential and that’s what my boyfriend Rocky received!
(He is soooo handsome!)
So, the moral of the story is that even in Arizona, you
must give your dog a heartworm preventative. Heartgard,
Tri Heart Plus or any of the others have to be
prescribed by a vet after a negative test. Do it. Your
pal’s life may depend on it. We have so much love to
give…don’t shorten our lives by neglecting this
important medication.
